What is the purpose of MCCB? Where is it used?

Undoubtedly electricity is one of the most critical aspects of today’s modern living, and people have become dependent on it immensely with each passing day. Thus, taking intelligent and practical actions has become necessary to save electric power supply consumption. The first step that needs to be taken is managing electrical devices and controlling the current flow.

What is MCCB?

MCCB is also called a Moulded Case Circuit Breaker. Wherever adjustable tripping is required, MCCB is put to use. It is mainly used for high-current applications and can be manually operated for tripping the circuit. 

MCCBs are mainly used for low as well as high breaking capacity requirements. Therefore, it is mainly used primarily for industrial complexes.

The electric device MCCB is considered an electrical protective device. It is mainly used to protect the electric circuit from oversupply current, which is the reason for causing a situation of overload or short circuit. 

MCCB is an electrical device required to make, carry and break currents between separate contacts under normal and abnormal circuit conditions. Abnormal current situations can be such as those of overload condition and short circuit condition. They also protect low-voltage distribution systems.

You will find MCCB with two arrangements, where one is for the over-temperature, and the other one is for over-current. It expands and contracts with the temperature change as it has a bimetallic property. During the normal working conditions, the bimetallic contact allows the current to flow freely through the circuit. 

However, if there is a case of over current going beyond the upper predefined limit, then the MCCB’s bimetallic contact will warm up and expand till the time they get open. Due to this feature, the circuit gets disconnected from the main supply, protecting the equipment from damage.

Features of MCCB

As mentioned above, MCCBs are very useful in providing protection against overload, short circuit faults and switching circuits on and off. However, this product is different and essential for its unique features of:

  • Compact size

MCCBs are compact in measurement and thus require an effective space inboard plan.

  • Lower downtime

The MCCB has functions of Reset and can be Switched-On again instantly as soon as you find the fault and solve it.

  • Reduction in inventory

MCCB features enable many functions like flexibility in stocking, installation and servicing.  

Applications Of MCCB

MCCBs are electrical devices built explicitly in a way that will be able to handle a high electrical supply of currents. These are widely used in industrial complexes for heavy-duty appliances. These heavy-duty applications include adjusting trip settings for applications with low currents, protecting capacitor banks, welding machines, protecting motors, and protecting generators and electric feeders.

With the combination of one of the two different trip elements, MCCBs will protect the circuit against difficult situations such as: 

  • Thermal Overload

In overload conditions, there is a temperature between the insulation and the conductor. Therefore, keeping the insulation in check; otherwise, the thermal overload will reduce its life, and the maintenance will be higher. It is also essential to catch the approach of MCCB for the better flow of current supply and lifelong approach of the electrical appliances. 

  • Short-circuit Condition 

A short circuit condition happens due to an intentional or unintentional low supply creation between phase wires or neutral & phase wires. Such situations will lead to an excessively high current flow through the circuit & voltage becomes negligible.

  • Ground Fault Condition
